End of term

Akank is not a new student at the school anymore. She is one term old! The portfolio she brought back from school says she has done well in most subjects and is ‘developing’ in one ( No point for guessing which subject that one is). She has no projects to work on for the three week long break. All her extra classes, singing, math and piano are also suspended for December. Akank is truly enjoying a clean break from school. She has a list of places to visit before school reopens and I hope I will be able to take her to every one of them. We are setting sail tonight on a cruise liner that will take us on a three night three day extravaganza to two destinations in Malaysia. It will be a first for Akank and the family.

I will update you on what we did when we return!

Walking with dino’s

Akank and the family spent an unusual evening  at the Singapore Indoor Stadium, watching the arena spectacular of Walking with Dinosaurs. Even though AKank has outgrown her dinosaur craze, she has been there and done it. There was a time when we would buy all things dinosaur, when she was hooked to watching Jurassic Park and its many versions, religiously once every week. The few Navaratri Golu’s in the same period, would have a park filled with miniature dinosaurs and aptly titled Jurassic park.  Akank also has in her collection of movie titles, a few more we acquired around the same time- a few parts of Land before time ( just found out that they made 13 parts of that movie!) and another called Dinosaur. Before her fixation for sea life, horses and dogs, Akank would read up trivia on dinosaurs and could name all of them just by looking at the pictures. So, you can imagine how it rekindled some fond memories of  how much she loved stocking up information on dinosaurs big and small. When we heard that the famous BBC series by the same title was being produced as a theatrical event, we grabbed the opportunity to book seats when they came by for 12 days to Singapore.

I would have wanted this for Akank even if she had not been collecting trivia about dinosaurs. The two hour show was truly spectacular with 20 life sized dinosaurs walked the planet again!

The UN day and Foodfest

There is always something to celebrate at school this year! Akank and her classmates had been rehearsing for the UN day celebrations for a month and finally the day was celebrated on Friday last week. Akank’s school has students from all parts of the World and so it was an apt celebration to showcase the true spirit of being a united nation! Akank herself was part of the choir and sang a French Canadian folk song called ‘Jéntends le Moulin’ (zhon-tala-moola in case I forget the pronunciation!)  an Israeli folk song ‘Çhiri biri bim’ and John Legend’s If you are out there ( What a song!).  Here is the original version by the man himself.

She also played the rhythms of Mbira a piece of Shona African Marimba music. It was an ensemble and Akank did not miss a beat on the Kalimba! I am so proud of her (in retrospect that is – since while she was at it, my heart was in my mouth).

Alongside, the parents from the various continents of the World were invited to host food for the children on UN day. There was food from 20 different countries and the kids could feast on food from a country that they fancied. Though I must tell you that among all food stalls, the one with the chocolate fountain and ice cream cones won hands down.
